About lymphomas

Lymphoma is a type of cancer that originates in the lymphatic system, which is part of the body’s immune system. It’s characterized by the abnormal growth of lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell. Lymphomas are broadly classified into two main categories: Hodgkin lymphoma and non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

Hodgkin Lymphoma:

  • Hodgkin Lymphoma , also known as Hodgkin disease, is a type of cancer that affects the lymphatic system, usually found in the lymph nodes.
  • HL is characterized by the presence of very large cells called Reed-Sternberg (RS) cells, although other abnormal cell types may be present. HL usually starts in the lymph nodes; however, it often spreads from one lymph node to another and can also spread to other organs.
  • Hodgkin lymphoma is less common than non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Although the cancer can occur in both children and adults, it is most commonly diagnosed in young adults between the ages of 15 and 35 and older adults over age 50.

Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma:

  • Non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) is a group of blood cancers that develop in the lymphatic system, which is part of the body’s immune system. It’s a diverse group of cancers that affect B or T lymphocytes, the white blood cells that help fight infection. Unlike Hodgkin lymphoma, NHL encompasses a wider variety of subtypes with different characteristics and behaviors
  • Enlarged lymph nodes: This is a common early sign, often appearing in the neck, armpits, or groin.
  • Fever: Unexplained fever, especially at night, can be a symptom.
  • Night sweats: Excessive sweating, particularly at night, is another indicator.
  • Unexplained weight loss: Significant weight loss without trying can be a sign.
  • Fatigue: Persistent tiredness or weakness.

Other symptoms: Depending on the location and type of lymphoma, symptoms may include bone pain, chest pain, itchy skin, or difficulty breathing.

  • The exact causes of lymphoma are not fully understood, but certain factors can increase the risk.
  • Age: Risk increases with age.
  • Sex: Some lymphomas are more common in males.
  • Immune system disorders: Conditions like HIV/AIDS or autoimmune diseases can elevate the risk.
  • Family history: Having a family member with lymphoma can slightly increase the risk.

Exposure to certain chemicals or radiation: Exposure to specific pesticides and radiation can be a risk factor.
